Jacobs Music Center

Project

In 2023, K&A fabricated the large acoustic reflector panels for the renovation and modernization of the San Diego Symphony's Jacobs Music Center (previously "Copely Hall"). The panels hang from the ceiling and are mounted to a mechanical system that articulates their position, tuning the acoustics of the space according to the needs of a given performance.

The 20 panels vary in size up to 11'x11' and feature a highly detailed surface pattern which is aesthetically striking. The pattern echoes the aesthetics of the surrounds and functions to diffuse high frequency sound energy. We worked closely with the designers to tune the details of the pattern to suit the digitally driven fabrication process without compromising the design requirements or the budget.

Molds for the panels were digitally designed by the architect and acoustician. The digital models drove our large CNC machine to make molds which were used to cast FRP panels made with polyester resin, glass fiber, and backfilled with polymer concrete to achieve the 5 lb/ft² density required for lower end sound reflectivity. The panels are finished with a metallic paint.
