Geffen Hall Acoustic Panels

Project

Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic accelerated the long awaited revitalization of the iconic David Geffen Hall which reopened in 2022. The hall called for acoustically reflective, advanced composite ceiling panels. The design of the panels was a collaborative effort with the project team, especially the architect, to find an optimum balance between the geometry, performance, fabrication process, materials, schedule, and cost. There was a lot of coordinated refinement of the "firefly" pattern which is designed to diffuse sound and gives the ceiling its unique aesthetics.

The composite panels are comprised of chopped strand glass reinforcement and polyester resin. They're engineered to weigh 5 lb/ft² and meet code requirements for fire safety. They are mounted to articulating arms which can be used to tune the position of the panels according to the specific acoustic needs of a given performance.
