Floating Peel
Project
Floating Peel by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen is one of an edition of four created by Kreysler & Associates based on the artist’s maquette. Floating Peel’s geometry was captured with the laser scanner. Foam patterns were fabricated in full-scale, and female FRP molds were. Due to the extremely small ground contact point, the laminate is carbon fiber. Fabrication utilized a unique interleafing of thin ribbons of ¼-inch-thick by 1-inch-wide 5-pound per cubic foot PVC foam core, which gradually increased in frequency towards the top. As a result, the laminate is nearly solid carbon fiber at the bottom, gradually being replaced by foam towards the top.
