Plenty of people throughout history have offered up definitions of fine art, from Plato to Jesse Helms. Our job at K&A is not to decide what is or is not art. Our job is to faithfully and accurately translate an artist's concept and model into a larger or smaller version. Unlike theater props or theme park sculpture which give form to the viewer's imagination, fine art expands the viewer's imagination; to do so depends on extraordinarily subtle detail and expression. The tiny crook in a smile, the anguish in a pair of eyes, the flowing lines of a monumental sculpture's graceful curves - all are windows the viewer uses to see beneath and beyond the sculpture's outer form to its art. To lose this is to lose the focus of the lens and to lose the strength in a piece of art. To aid in this translation, K&A has pioneered a breakthrough in the ancient art of enlarging. Invented by the Egyptians, thousands of years before Christ, enlarging changed very little over the centuries. Until the advent of computers, enlarging was simply measuring an original with hand measuring devices and multiplying the dimensions appropriately. The inherent error in this process led to inaccuracies forcing the use of interim enlargements to create sculptures whose end result needed to be more than 3 or 4 times the original size. With the development of the CATSCAN medical 3-D imaging technology, and then the Cyberware Laboratories' 3-D surface mapping digitizer, it became possible to accurately map the surface of a 3-D object. Taking nearly 250,000 measurement points in less than one minute, the Cyberware scanner creates a 3-D digital image with precise x, y, z coordinates for every point. By manipulating this data in a computer and feeding the results into a computer controlled cutting machine, K&A has taken enlarging to a new plane. Although some other companies are starting to offer this service, none has done it as long or as often as we have. K&A's experience and purpose-built CNC milling machine insure the best results for the best price. Scalable resolution allows you to tailor the cost and degree of detail to fit you technique and budget. K&A has worked with famous and not-so-famous sculptors to enlarge or replicate sculptures to their satisfaction. With our state-of-the-art scanning and digital enlargement techniques, we can handle any sculpture, large or small.
